Restaurant 1741 – Strasbourg – France Visit Review: 13.8

Twice fail.

Restaurant that deserves its Michelin star but that left me (for the second time) on my unsatisfied.

First of all you have to know that there are three rooms. (Only the ground floor is accessible to the disabled because the building is eighteenth century and difficult to convert). The first two classics and the last in format “tables and high chairs” facing the kitchen.

I had visited it a few years ago and the meal was very good except a disaster on a sweetbread. Served not enough cooked, returned to the kitchen and returned simply sawn, seared and re-used as is! At this level of restaurant, you redo the dish.

The roll of spaghetti was strange. Visually funny. Taste interesting even if mix of pasta and seafood never enjoyed me really.

Second attempt this month of April 2016, with the discovery menu 5 dishes and 2 desserts (135 euros). In the dining room at the 2nd floor where is the kitchen and you have the opportunity to dine with vision on this open space.

If you find my pictures glaucous, it’s just that the lighting in this room is disastrous. You seems to eat on a bench of the Forensic Institute. The LED bars on the ceiling give a white light that does not match the color of the plate or the colouring of women.

The meal … All the food is of quality but it lacks a coherence.

Asparagus very tender but they are the first, so evanescent taste.

The egg of 64 Celsius° is interesting but the morilles weak in taste and the spinach a little too present.

The filet of Saint-Pierre is perfectly cooked but the crust of toasted bread on it is too powerful.

The beef Simenthal is cooked well (although I was not asked my cooking wanted) but the Béarnaise sauce too vinegary. It passed on the beef but the taste is too violent on the wine

The lobster was the only completely perfect dish.

It is therefore clear that there is undoubtedly quality work on the products but too many small errors on details. And that spoils a lot. And their repetition is hardly acceptable at this level of pretension. Progress will imperatively require more attention.

Special mention to sommelier, young but competent.

Good service.

Nice view of Strasbourg (Cathedral, Rohan Palace, River Ill).

Little thing to improve: he is very kind of offers to make a pack to go for mignardises. But you need a box adapted in size and not a huge cake box in which roam 2 macaroons, 2 madeleines and 4 pieces of nougats.

The check is very reasonable for the products served.
