Mamma Mia – Grand Baie – Mauritius
If I listened to my friend Paul-Emmanuel, I would put a 20/20 and write a dithyrambic article on Mamma Mia, one of his Mauritian canteens. But as my best half sometimes says, I’m not always someone cool …
Do not expect a shootdown flame because we eat pretty well in this Italian restaurant in Grand BaIE. It has the first benefit of having existed for years. This proves that the owner is smart enough to have adapted to local operation, deadly to the pushy and “I know everything”.
We had dinner there twice which allowed us to test both the pizza part and the more traditional Italian part.
The plate of charcuterie is qualitative, which is not obvious in Mauritius. Finding good, original foods has to cost our owner a little bit in import.
And the pizzas are good. Obviously, do not ask the real Neapolitan. The work of the dough is always more complicated in the tropics. But the dough is well cooked and the elements there also of quality.
Special mention to “ragu alla bolognese” which is a good choice of dishes if you want to stay peninsular without going into the pizza.
And tuna tartare or octopus salad if you prefer to be Mauritian than peninsular …
Crème brûlée without much interest. But there was only that because the Tiramisu was out of stock.
Good choice of foreign wines including Italian.
The real problem comes from the lighting which is awful. I am convinced that the owner loses tourists who, passing the restaurant, go away on seeing the atmosphere.
Then an Italian restaurant that does not have Grappa, it spoils the end of the meal. Make the effort to have good charcuterie but not a beautiful traditional alcohol, it’s a pity.
Service not very hurry. But you are on holidays …
Bill of 95 euros for 2. Maybe 10% too expensive.
