Les Orientalistes – Paris – France
Sardines better grilled than meat.
With such a name, you can quickly feel a somewhat intellectual restaurant. And indeed, the setting has nothing to do with the usual North African decorations (sometimes beautiful, sometimes kitschy as hell) that decorate 99% of “couscous” restaurants.
Here, we are rather in a nostalgia for the past times when France was present on the other side of the Mediterranean. Antique paintings, quality sculptures, red velvet seats take you back to a chic and cozy Western club. Only a library, shelves of old books and their characteristic smell are missing.
The kitchen is in the same state of mind, trying to combine the sun’s contribution to the products of France.
However, it is the ultra tradition that I test first with stuffed and grilled sardines with spices. Everything is there, the freshness of the product, the balance of the spices. Nostalgic people will not be disoriented.
A little less happy with the mechoui couscous that lacks grilled. The meat is honest and the broth is honest, but nothing really exceptional. Very good harissa.
Perhaps I should have turned to more northern dishes such as rosemary sea bass fillet or marjoram preserved lamb mouse?
I could have had dessert if the sudden stop of the music had not made me understand that the service was over (I was the last one) and that it was time for me to leave. However, at 1:44 p. m., I thought I would be given the opportunity to stroll through the streets of the Kasbah.
Perhaps the service lacks a little nonchalance in its orientalism?
The website is a disaster with the incompatibility of all accented characters. Unreadable.
