Chez Ali – Marrakech – Morocco
Once in your life!
To say that I walked backwards to book a table there is a weak word. It is amlmost a gun on the temple that I accepted the proposal of my guide to spend the evening in this 1st category tourist-trap. Even if it means to sink into the supposed disaster, both do things big, so I took VIP seats.
The arrival is a real disaster for the historian that I am. One is welcomed between pasteboard sets worthy of a peplum of the sixties. The cave of Ali-Baba is hilarious of kitsch. Groups of local singers and dancers succeed one another without being able to discern the variety of the fake.
And we arrive near the arena and at our tables. And here, the good surprise!
We have a table of 10 for us 5. We have an old waiter who had to be hired when the complex was built and who was very attentive and smiling throughout the evening.
We had the full menu, with Harira, mechoui and pastries. It’s not bad. Even good! The quantities are copious, the lamb is well grilled, a huge shoulder full for 2 adults and 3 children. At the end of the meal, we join our seats in the VIP box overlooking the arena. The show is also built on all the fantasies and images of stereotypes on the Arab past. Everything, belly dance being the pinnacle. The best for last with the Fantasia and guns to impress the gallery.
What to conclude? It’s not that expensive, the food is very decent and it’s nice for the kids. It is better to take the VIP package (15 euros more) which allows you to be really well placed at the tables and show box.
However, do not delay to go after dinner because the places are counted. So, let’s go once in our life, and like Napoleon’s grognard (soldier of the Old Guard) the day after Austerlitz, you will be able to say: “I was there”.
Check 118 euros for 2 adults. Call for child rates. Alcohols are extra.
